How much does ISP billing software cost in Kenya?
Updated 19 October 2026 · VillageHub
Short answer
In Kenya, hosted ISP billing software for a small operator usually costs between KES 500 and a few thousand shillings a month, and free self-hosted software costs only the server, from about KES 640 a month. VillageHub charges KES 500 a month or 3% of what you collect for hotspot, whichever is higher, so a hotspot collecting KES 60,000 a month pays KES 1,800, and PPPoE costs KES 25 per active client, so a 100-client ISP pays KES 2,500. Comparable published prices are Centipid at 3% of hotspot revenue and USD 0.25 (about KES 32) per PPPoE user with a KES 500 minimum, WifiPay from KES 500 a month plus KES 1,500 setup, XenFi at 3% per sale with no monthly fee, and SopraEnt at a flat USD 7 (about KES 908). Budget separately for payment gateway fees and SMS.

Pricing models you will see
Kenyan ISP billing is sold in four main ways. Each one is cheaper for a different kind of operator, so work out your own numbers before comparing headline prices.
- Flat monthly fee: one price regardless of sales, such as SopraEnt’s USD 7 or WifiPay’s user-count tiers. Predictable, and cheapest when your sales are high.
- Revenue share: a percentage of what customers pay, such as XenFi’s 3% per sale or Centipid’s 3% of hotspot revenue. Cheap in slow months, more expensive as you grow.
- Floor or percentage, whichever is higher: VillageHub hotspot billing charges KES 500 or 3% of collections. You pay KES 500 until you collect more than about KES 16,667 a month, then 3%.
- Per active user: common for PPPoE, such as VillageHub at KES 25, Centipid at USD 0.25 and WifiPay at KES 20 above 25 users. Cost grows with your client count, not your revenue.
- Self-hosted: PHPNuxBill and Mikhmon are free under the GPL, but you pay for a server and spend your own time on setup, security, backups and updates. Contabo advertises its Cloud VPS 4 (4 vCPU, 8 GB RAM) from EUR 4.40 a month, about KES 642.
Hidden costs to budget for
- Payment gateway fees: if you collect M-Pesa through Paystack, its Kenya pricing page lists 1.5% per M-Pesa transaction and 2.9% per local card transaction, plus a fee to transfer the money out (for example KES 40 to KES 180 to a Paybill or Till, depending on amount). If you use Daraja STK push on your own Paybill or Till instead, check the transaction charges on your Safaricom business tariff.
- SMS: receipts, vouchers and reminders by SMS are usually billed by your SMS provider. A June 2026 HelloDuty guide lists Africa’s Talking at a published baseline of KES 0.80 per SMS and Celcom Africa at KES 0.50 to 0.90.
- Setup and installation: VillageHub has no setup fee; WifiPay charges KES 1,500 one-time; Centipid offers optional MikroTik installation support for USD 10.
- Hosting and your time: self-hosted software needs a server, a domain, backups and someone to fix it when it breaks.
- Exchange rates: fees quoted in USD change in shillings when the rate moves; KES-priced plans do not.
Worked example: a small hotspot collecting KES 60,000 a month
- 1VillageHubmax(KES 500, 3% of 60,000 = KES 1,800) = KES 1,800 a month. Money lands in your own M-Pesa account.
- 2Centipid3% of 60,000 = KES 1,800, above its KES 500 minimum, so KES 1,800 a month.
- 3XenFi3% per sale = KES 1,800 a month, taken from sales.
- 4SopraEntFlat USD 7, about KES 908 a month. Cheapest hosted option at this revenue.
- 5Self-hosted PHPNuxBill or MikhmonAbout KES 642 a month for a Contabo Cloud VPS 4, plus your own time.
- 6Add gateway and SMS costsIf you collected the full KES 60,000 through Paystack M-Pesa at 1.5%, that adds KES 900. Sending 1,000 SMS at KES 0.80 adds KES 800. These apply whichever billing system you use.
Worked example: a PPPoE ISP with 100 active clients
- 1VillageHub100 x KES 25 = KES 2,500 a month.
- 2Centipid100 x USD 0.25 = USD 25, about KES 3,241 a month.
- 3WifiPayIts PPPoE Scale tier lists KES 20 per user for 26+ users: 100 x KES 20 = KES 2,000 a month, plus KES 1,500 one-time setup.
- 4SopraEntFlat USD 7, about KES 908 a month; its single plan includes PPPoE.
- 5XenFi3% of PPPoE sales. If each client pays KES 2,000 a month, that is 3% of KES 200,000 = KES 6,000.
Which is cheapest for you
On price alone, a flat-fee plan such as SopraEnt’s is cheapest once your revenue is high, a revenue share such as XenFi’s is cheapest when sales are low or irregular, and self-hosted software is cheapest if your own time is free. VillageHub is priced in the middle: it is not the cheapest in either worked example, but it includes no setup fee, unlimited routers, payments into your own account, a 30-day trial, agents and the Android agent app, a white-label customer app and automatic PPPoE cut-off and reconnect in that price. Compare what each plan includes, not only the monthly number.
